Apple is gearing up to unveil its iOS 18 operating system at the WWDC 2024 event on June 10. This update is anticipated to be one of the most significant in the company’s history, introducing a host of new features powered by generative AI. Additionally, users can expect a revamped Siri voice assistant along with major upgrades to Siri, Apple Music, Messages, iWork, and the Settings app.
Expected Features of iOS 18
Recent reports indicate that Apple may have partnered with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, to integrate generative AI capabilities into iOS 18 for enhanced features. Interestingly, many of these AI features are expected to operate on-device rather than relying on the cloud. To further reduce dependency on OpenAI, Apple is also exploring a partnership with Google to incorporate Gemini into iOS 18.
Utilizing on-device AI offers several advantages, such as enhanced privacy, offline functionality, and faster response times. However, on-device large language models (LLMs) are typically not as powerful or knowledgeable as those supported by vast server networks, like commercial chatbots such as ChatGPT or Gemini.
Apple is likely to introduce AI-powered enhancements in Safari, Messages, Notes, Spotlight, and Siri. A standout feature of iOS 18 could be the integration of AI-driven photo editing tools for enhanced user control and creativity in enhancing their visual content.
Expected Release Date for iOS 18
Apple usually announces its latest iOS updates during the WWDC keynote address. Following the keynote, the first developer beta of the new version is usually released within hours of the keynote address. According to a 9to5Mac report, the first public beta for iOS 18 is expected to be available about a month after the keynote, around mid-to-late July.
Apple traditionally rolls out the stable version of the update to all existing devices shortly after the launch of its newest iPhone series in September.
